A man, A plan, A canal, Panama

OK,
So this is going to get flaming sishkabobs thrown at me (like that guy in Temple of Doom) but for the love of Nathaniel Rochester, are we Rochestarians such suckers that we fall for another 'this will fix all everything, I promise' giant money-hole project.

It seems that we are such suckers.

El Mayor says we should at least 'put it on the table'. Ok. It's Table time.  The Grasso-Zimmer plan will cost 10-13 million dollars and it will create more waterfront along the downtown section of the Genesee river (that no one actually uses as waterfront).  There is, of course, no guarantee it would bring any business to downtown, at all. But you know, tinkerbell says if you believe, it will happen! Just like High falls did! Did I mention it will cost 10-13 million!  Please, can I take it off the table now? It's starting to stain reality.

Now, we tried High Falls. We tried the Fast Ferry. We're still toying with Ren. square. Can we actually stop for once and  think about  the success rate of our last 3 giant money-sucking projects on Rochester, before throwing another 10-13 million dollars Consultant & Developers party?

Hey!  I know! What we really need is a monorail.. You know,  to connect together all of these fantasticlly successful city-saving projects that have turned our economic around! We can build it out of silver bullets!

No shit, the other on the Bob Smith show on XXI, someone actually mentioned a monorail in discussion of the aforementioned project. Someone get the Mayors of Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, and Brockway on the phone.

Stupid media: _start following stories wherein solutions to problems don't include $[digits]_. The only thing they'll cover is when it's something to do with money. What about non-financial things that make senses? JayceLand.com? RocWriters.com? Anybody?

"Is there a chance the track could bend?"

"Not a chance, my Hindu friend!"

"Monorail, Monorail, MONORAIL!!!!!"

I've already said most of my peace on the issue at my own site (Check the blog). However, I've got time on this Fourth of July to add one more: The best part of this plan is: nothing like a large body of brackish standing water right next to a large population center with lotsa poor people.

You know.. I think a monorail would be a great way to get some stuff going in this community. BUT.. If I were to guess, I'd imagine that the planning board of the city would want a monorail that connected the Renn. Ctr. with the Port with High Falls so we could show off all of our failed projects at once. I think a monorail that connected REAL commerce centers wouldn't be so bad. Maybe make the rail follow the expressways and connect the malls - eastview, marketplace, midtown and irondequoit (out of fairness and neccessity), greece ridge and maybe even the new webster center. I'd love to be able to drive to my Irondequoit mall so I could use it as a parking lot and go shopping in Eastview, only to come back and find my car broken into twice. At least I wouldn't have to pollute. :)
