What's the right length?

I was asked recently if I had any thoughts on the appropriate length for a blog entry, whether it's here or on some other site.

It reminded me of the advice of the Rev. Murphy, my freshman English teacher some 30 years ago -- egads -- at Aquinas. The subject was term papers, and we were seeking guidance on the appropriate length of our reports on whatever the mandatory book of the week was.

"The paper should be like a women's skirt," he said. "Long enough to cover everything but short enough to keep me interested."
