When I first moved to the southwest after living all my life (up until that point, duhr) in the rust belt, I found that I was oddly nostalgic about stuff I never thought I would be: gray skies, urban decay, brick buildings, and, yes, rust.
The first time I came back to this neck o' the woods, I landed in Cleveland, and on the ride back to my hometown, I was amazed at how rusty every car looked. Especially going through Ohio, which, at the time had no car inspection law (maybe they still don't). Cars with enormous rust holes in panels, passenger doors tied on with rope, trucks missing fenders... ah, home.
